Have you ever thought about going to a networking event but felt so anxious that you talked yourself out of it? You’re not alone.
Many online business owners and freelancers work from home, rarely stepping out to meet people in real life. But if you’ve been feeling called to grow your visibility and expand your connections, business networking events might be the missing piece.
In this blog, I’m sharing the heart of a recent podcast episode where I talk openly about how I overcame the fear of walking into a room of strangers and how networking has genuinely shifted things for me, personally and professionally. Whether you’re brand new to business networking events or you’ve dabbled but felt awkward, this is for you.
☕ Let’s Talk Honestly About Business Networking Events
Business networking events have a reputation for being stiff, formal, and a bit awkward, but that doesn’t have to be your experience. For me, the shift happened when I reframed what these events were for. It wasn’t about pitching. It was about connection.
I didn’t go because I had to. I went because I wanted to. To meet people, to have a cuppa and a chat, and to find those like-minded business owners who just get it. That small change in mindset was huge. When you approach business networking events as a chance to connect, not perform, everything changes.
And yes, it was uncomfortable at first. I’ve had to manage my nerves, my stutter, and the inner voice that said, “You’re going to look like an idiot.” But I’ve also watched my confidence grow every single time I’ve walked through a new door.
💡 My Top 3 Tips for Attending Networking Events When You Don’t Know a Soul
Tip #1 - Have a question ready.
I always go in armed with “Do you know which urn is the coffee?” It breaks the ice, it’s friendly, and it always starts a conversation. If it’s their first time too, great, buddy up. If not, ask how long they’ve been coming. Job done.
"Networking has become a real game changer for my confidence, my energy levels, as well as my client base."
Tip #2 - Know how you want to introduce yourself.
Tailor it to the room. I switch up how I describe my work depending on the crowd, and you can too. Clarity = confidence. Practice a few options so you’re never caught off guard.
Tip #3 - Hold a drink or something in your hand.
Sounds simple, but it’s a game-changer. Whether it’s a mug, a glass, or even a biscuit; having something to hold lowers anxiety and gives you something to do with your hands.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been thinking about going to a business networking event but doubt has been holding you back, I hope this has given you that nudge. You do not have to feel confident before you walk in. Confidence comes from showing up, being consistent, and letting yourself be a little uncomfortable while you grow.
And if you’re looking for something more low-key, friendly, and energising, come and try one of the events I host; whether it's Coffee, Cake and Connections hosted at The Dockyard in Kent or one of the weekly online meet ups in The Vivid Business Club.
This is your reminder: you are allowed to take up space in any room you walk into.
Let me know if you give a networking event a try; I’m already so proud of you.
